September 26

Landed to a colder London, winter is definitely coming on strong.

I had one of those days where I got things done at home at my pace. Did my washing and ironing (which I find relaxing) while playing records.

Re-wrote my intro for my travel book - it has to be finished this week and I still have no title. Maybe Ross Halfin or just Halfin, I just don't know, and I want to change things at the last minute in a paranoid way.

Kind of read the Sunday papers, more skimmed them then went for a run and a cycle. Had a hard sports massage with my female Irish torturer, Bernie O'Donovan - she is amazing, kills you in a good way, and my right leg is still messed up.

Ross in a hat

Another picture of me in NY, looking very "gay" according to a friend of mine, and you know what, that's fine by me...

September 25

Empire State Building

Woke up to a baking hot New York dawn. It was 80F at 7am. Didn't bother me at all, I shot a picture of God's light, or Ross's light, over Central Park. Made myself go for a run - it truly can clear the old mind. Felt euphoric, it set me up for rest of the day.

Met my friend Bill McCue who took me record shopping, a dying art in Manhattan. Some of the stuff was woefully overpriced - the first MC5 LP $100, errr, NO! But I did get -

Grand Funk, the red album cover, 2nd or 3rd LP - nice and hard to find in good condition.
The Mahavishnu Orchestra Live, Between Nothingness & Eternity - mint unplayed.
Rod Stewart, Gasoline Ally with embossed US cover - mint. After buying it I remembered I bought one in LA two weeks ago and have another two copies at home. I need my brain looked at.
Gruppo Sportivo, Mistakes with an extra 7 inch EP - unplayed on Sire. I shot them at Reading Festival in 1977 and really liked them. They were a Dutch Band, quite quirky.

Bill and I walked along Broadway into Soho where I found Shakespeare & Co Bookshop, which was excellent. Lots of hardback first editions on sale. I found Kurt Vonnegut, Armageddon In Retrospect, and this book because it drew me in - The Land Of The Green Plums by Herta Muller, about Ceausescu's Romania, translated from a German edition.

Ross in a hat Ross in a hatl

I left Bill and went to look at the shops, a bad thing to do in NY.You can not spend money shopping. I was chatted up by a pretty shop assistant who convinced me to buy a hat. Now you have to realise I have never worn a hat in my life. I was unsure, 'You look cool,' said the girl. 'Sold' said I...

Now I was joined by Ulf Zick, eating a half a cow sandwich which he was just finishing. 'Want some? Come on, it's great, try it.' 'Nein,' I told him in his mother tongue, 'Ordung Muss Sein.' So after buying my hat Ulf took over and had me posing in Soho while he fired away, and ladies, if you think it works do get in touch... Thirty minutes later young Ulf then insisted we needed a snack so he marched me to Momofuku noodle bar. It had, and I mean this, the best pork belly buns ever. I ordered extra - I'll be going back as soon as I can.

Left Herr Ulf and had to go back to my hotel to meet up with Rob Pistella who gave me some LPs - Mott, Thick As A Brick, both US pressings and a Monkees LP. Rob kindly gave me a wonderful Frank Franzetta Book from the Alexander Gallery. He and I did some trading and I got two signed Frazetta litographs - not a bad day at all.

Found Dave Brolan and he and I headed off to JFK for an evening flight home on Kuwaiti Airlines, which was half empty, with friendly cabin crew as it should be. Flew home thinking how much I enjoyed New York. I used to dread coming there - I wished I'd stayed for another day. Funny how you go back to what you know, and I used to know NYC well - and still do.

Ronnie Wood Ronnie Wood

Some more pictures of Ronnie Wood at the Palace Hotel, NY, playing Devotion...

September 24

Ronnie Wood Ross at the Palace Hotel

Ran at dawn then spent the morning photographing Ronnie Wood at the penthouse suite in the Palace Hotel. Ronnie was fantastic, he looked good and was playing Faces songs I asked on request - I got Devotion, I Feel So Good and Richmond and he sang and played I Can Feel The Fire. He gave me a copy of his new cd. It was excellent. Good to do a shoot that you feel good about after it's over...

Spent the rest of the day running around seeing people. Obama is in NY so the traffic was gridlocked. I went down to Soho for a look and ended up in Dean & Deluca drinking coffee and eating cakes - I must sort my diet out, it consists of fish, fruit and then I give in to cake. After my cake I felt so guilty I ran again, it was a good head clearer.

Met Ulf Zick at Dylan's Prime Steak (I think it was called that), one of those places where each dish looks the size of a cow. Must get back into sashimi, or something light.

September 23

At Terminal 4 Heathrow queuing at security to go to NY via Kuwaiti Airlines, "front of plane". I'll be getting caviar and goat for dinner, two wives for dessert...

Security was on full red alert as you boarded - bags, shoes, body search etc.

Clouds Clouds Clouds

Photographed huge storm clouds flying out of London, white grey rising into a blue sky, hadn't done it for a while - it was exciting.

The crew were "nice", mainly females from the Philippines and Thailand plus one from Kuwait, chatty and friendly. The deluxe cuisine was vintage Edgware Road without the belly dancer and the big plus was it was an empty flight, just myself and my harem in waiting as I enjoyed the cabin decor modelled after a Sultan's palace. My seat converted into a large ottoman waterbed, which was alright for an hour then I started to feel seasick, like a child riding in the back seat of a car. Landed and one of my Rimowa cases was missing. They found it after an hour and were, dare I say it, helpful...

I have meetings in New York re-exhibiting my travel photography to tie in with my book - it's exciting to have a gallery show that's not music.

Staying at the Essex House, up-graded to a bigger suite than last week - I'm not complaining. The hotel is full of security from the UN - suits with ear pieces and walkie-talkies all looking you up and down - kind of has a vibe though. I remembered this was the first hotel I ever stayed at in NY while doing Blondie and UFO, it was old-fashioned and full of hookers then. Still old-fashioned with a cool looking bar.

I have a lot of friends in New York at the moment. I was going to see Ulf Zick instead I ended up with Jimmy Hubbard and Dave Brolan at the Gotham Bar and Grill eating meat, meat and more meat, a carnivorous finish to the evening.

September 22

I ran today for the first time since my car was smashed up. My right leg has been killing me - I forced myself to do it, hard at first then switched off my mind and I got into it. I felt euphoric afterwards - on top of the world, it was a better feeling than any drug I'd ever taken and in my day I've taken a few. I am happy...

Had to go to the Apple Store who are "fixing" my brand new MacBook Pro. It has been there since Sunday and they hadn't even started. Then I was being talked down to by a child genius serving me. So I turned (is the best way to put it) and gave him a "tune-up" as my old mate Rangi would say. It is now being done for later today. Apple - the service is fucking awful!

Still, today is a truly beautiful day, London at it's best.

Marie Helvin and Jerry Hall

Another photo from my Travel book - Marie Helvin and Jerry Hall backstage at a Journey show in Hawaii, September 1983. I was and still am in love with Marie Helvin- wish I could remember what I said to make her laugh. She is the epitome of beauty.

September 21

Looked through some old boxes of mixed stuff today, found a whole load of negs I've been missing. A lot of Bali which I'll add to my book, Marie Helvin and Jerry Hall at a Journey show in Hawaii (I was and still am in love with Marie Helvin), and lots of Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, and Robert Plant, in colour.

Empire State Building

Even found a print of the Empire State Building, it sums up the grandeur and dirty seediness of New York. I'm off back to NYC this Thursday and every flight and hotel is full - I found out it's the UN General Assembly.

I have to say finding the negatives has made me very happy - must dig some more. And best of all today Baron Wolman, a photographer I am privileged to know, has written something for my travel book, a great compliment - it has made my day...

September 20

Got a hire car today, as I needed to drive if I was ever going to drive again. Odd, I've driven all my life and now the cars, traffic, stop lights were all exaggerated in my mind. Everything seemed magnified. I felt like a child - cautious, slightly afraid. And my right side and knee are still aching so I can't go running which is my drug or head clearer.

Been playing Rock Love by The Steve Miller Band which I have on vinyl. It has a good grove, if that isn't to '70s sounding.

Looked at my travel book which still has no title and I need to write my copy within the next two days. I am happy with it, just need a bit of inspiration - perhaps this...

Tell me, enigmatic man, whom do you love best? Your father, your mother, your sister, or your brother?
"I have neither father, nor mother, nor sister, nor brother."
Your friends, then?
"You use a word that until now has had no meaning for me."
Your country?
"I am ignorant of the latitude in which it is situated."
Then Beauty?
"Her I would love willingly, goddess and immortal."
What, then, extraordinary stranger, do you love?
"I love the clouds... the clouds that pass yonder..."

September 18

This date always sticks in my mind - just thought about seeing Goodbye Summer - The Who, Faces, Mott The Hoople - thirty-nine years ago today at The Oval Cricket Ground. I would love the poster for that show if anyone out there has it. I can't believe I saw bands playing that long ago. And Jimi Hendrix died forty years ago today. I remember buying Voodoo Chile-Slight Return for six shillings, rushed out the same week - "I stand up next to a mountain and chop it down with the ledge of my hand..."

My body feels like it's been chopped down. I'm sore all down my right side and my jaw feels like it's been kicked several times. It did get kicked I suppose, at sixty miles an hour straight into me. I think I'm in shock today, or just how lucky I was is bothering me.

I smashed my glass kettle this week - my car is smashed to pulp and I think my brain is a bit smashed as well...

MIss Kato MIss Kato

Now for something nicer to look at - the future Mrs Halfin, Miss Kato. My only problem is how to meet her...

September 17

I was going to an event in London last night. As I was driving a large van hit me on my drivers side - my car was completely destroyed. I walked away without a mark on me, the whole bottom of my car had bent in two and the side I was driving had caved in. If there is a God he was watching me... Luckily my friends Gordon and Atif were nearby and dealt with the police etc. I was a bit shocked - Julie Abbott came like a knight to the rescue.

Woke up this morning feeling like I've been run over by a train. Life can be, what's the right word? "Strange". Thinking about this I'm fortunate to be in one piece. And I'm thinking about a higher power what or who ever it may be...

September 15

Ross and Oliver Halfin Ross and Oliver Halfin Ross and Oliver Halfin

Oliver Halfin and slightly older Halfin - young, free and both single...

Yesterday I had lunch with lawyer David Atlas at David's favourite New York restaurant, Gotham Bar And Grill. I expected a hamburger bar - it was very upmarket. Good food, good vibe, great place, next time I'm here I'll come for dinner.

Finished lunch and had another look around Soho then checked out of the Essex House Hotel. Years ago this was the first hotel I ever stayed at in NY when I used to shoot for Sounds and Chrysalis Records in the days of Blondie and UFO. It has an old school style, the new bar is hip and trendy.

Flew home last night from a warm sunny New York. Shot a bit of Manhattan as we left before the flight turned away from NY.

New York New York New York
New York New York New York New YorkNew Jersey

Good flight, pleasant crew, in fact a friendly crew on Continental and the Business/First have good seats. I slept and woke as it was still dark. We circled for an hour (always makes me feel sick), then the cold dawn light came and we turned and flew over London which I shot as well.

LondonNew York New York New York New York

Noticed in NY and London that the light is changing, the shadows are getting longer - winter is coming. I truly hate winter, dark long days. I find winter depressing.

It's my son Oliver's birthday today and as I was driving home from the airport I remembered he was born at 9am and I arrived home then. I normally just phone him or give him a card. I'm seeing him today and I'm going to try and "celebrate" him - he deserves it from a grumpy jet-lagged old dad - Happy Birthday Oliver xxx

September 13

A beautiful day, baking hot. I walked over to Q-Prime and gave Peter Mensch (manager from the stars) a copy of my Metallica book. Peter has written an into about "Moi" and it was good of him - and it is excellent.

Had lunch with Donna Faircloth from Varvatos who bought lunch then let me go to the Soho Varvatos store and partake of some clothes. I tried not to abuse her hospitality so a big thank you xxx

Late afternoon I walked around Madison and the upper east side. The sky went a dark slate grey then it was thunder, lightning, torrential rain, I got soaked - strange weather. The sort of weather you get in Melbourne, made me think the Gods are at war.

Met Brad Tolinski and my friend Bill McCue and we headed back to the Beacon Theatre for more ZZ Top. Saw Billy Gibbons who gave me another pile of t-shirts, I got all of the band to sign "Tejas-ZZ Tops First LP- and a Promo World Texas Tour". I know I'm being a fan, then again aren't we all?

Shot the show and I have to tell you I got some of the best photos I've taken of Billy. He was doing some extra posing for me. The crowdat the front tonight were shit-faced (as they say in America), at one point a moron tried to hit me over the head with a bottle as I wouldn't let him take pictures with my camera and Brad had to stop him. He ended in a chair getting undressed after the show, refusing to leave as security wondered what to do with him. It was a fun-fun-fun Monday night in NYC...

September 12

Ross in NY

Ross in NYA rainy New York day but I kind of didn't mind at all. Went down to Soho, ate at my favourite deli, Dean & Deluca - they have good cheese etc. I just like going there to smell it.

I met up with Rick Canny for a coffee and a wander. Rick pointed out to me 'It's good to be Ross Halfin at the moment' We looked in the upmarket John Varvatos store - I saw a jacket I liked at only $3,995 + tax, and a pair of boots only $895 + tax... It might be good to be me but shopping is dangerous - at least what I like.

A night of ZZ Top at the Beacon Theatre. I think the last time I was there was for Motley Crue in 1985-6, I don't remember the date. The crowd were very accommodating to me. No photo pit and they were fine with me shooting from the seats. In the front row were two Aerosmith fans, one lady with the band's signatures tattooed along her arms invited me to stand next to her so I would have a perfect view of the show. I didn't get her name so in the words of ZZ Top "I Thank You".

ZZ Top at the Beacon ZZ Top at the Beacon ZZ Top at the Beacon ZZ Top at the Beacon

Hung out with Billy after the show. He insisted I took a pile of t-shirts and he told me Peter Makowski had sent him a great email complimenting him. You can always have a good time with Billy Gibbons.

September 11

Could not sleep last night and had to head off to Heathrow at dawn, feeling on edge. Flying Continental who I hadn't flown with long haul since the early 80s. Security was just three people in their early twenties checking passports. I asked if they were trainees and they were. Incredible if you consider this is September 11 - 9/11...

Sat in the Skylounge where they had free full English breakfast, very good, and the flight was enjoyable - lots of World Cinema to choose from instead of the usual bland movies. I sat and read The Diary Of An Optimist and sketched some ideas to paint. I'm thinking around the idea of portraits. I want the painting to be ethereal - at least that's what I'm going to try to achieve, and it's what I studied to do.

Didn't eat on the flight but they had five courses to choose from - lamb chops, fish, curry, pasta, chicken - and before landing served a cheeseburger instead of the usual scones with jam. I just had a bit of fruit and watched the route map.

Arrived into a sunny warm NY. I'm staying at the Jumeirah Essex House on Central Park which has just been renovated and is super nice plus I got upgraded to a suite so I'm not complaining. Photographed a bit of the next building in the afternoon light, I feel very relaxed. What's that Silverhead song, Hello New York?

Had dinner at Shang at the Thompson Hotel with Brad Tolinski, Tom Beaujour, Wilf Wright and the very lovely Maggie Wang. We all headed off to the John Varvato's party at John's Store, the old CBGB's Club. The first person I saw was Ian Hunter and his wife Trudy, really good to see Ian, a true rock star. Got a few photos of John and Glenn Hughes with Dusty Hill. Then spent ages chatting to Billy Gibbons.

Ross and Billy Gibbons

The Masters Of Sparks - Bill F Gibbons and Ross W Halfin get on down (the VIP room was in the basement) at John Varvato's CBGBs NYC-BBQ

Cornered Ian Hunter and Alice Cooper together and even met Shep Gordon - Alice's legendary manager. Brad and I were both impressed. I told Shep I had the Alice poster for his first ever London show at the Rainbow Theatre November 7th 1971. I got chastised for taking a photo of Mike Myers with Alice, apparently Mike does not do photos! Wow, I must have forgotten he's a "Film Star".

It all got a bit too much, too many people. I bid adieu as Perry Farrell played.

September 10

Off to New York tomorrow at dawn - I should have gone today. I haven't been for a couple of years, odd that in the past I used to go there more than LA. I'm going to try to get to like it again - I know a lot of people there. I'm going to the John Varvato's fashion week party at CBGB's which is now John's store. ZZ Top are playing two nights at the Beacon Theatre and I may be shooting The Killer himself - Jerry Lee Lewis.

Finished writing an intro for a book of Def Leppard photos I have coming out next year. It is an official book. It started off quite hard then I remembered some funny stuff I had long forgotten about - at least I think it's funny. Some people think I have no sense of humour...

Kazuyo's husband returned some books I'd loaned him many years ago...

The Forgotten Soldier - War On The Russian Front
Commandant Of Auschwitz - The Autobiography Of Rudolf Hoess
The Last Pagan - The Apostate And The Death Of The Ancient World
The Devil - A Biography

Like one, that on a lonesome road
Doth walk in fear and dread,
Because he knows, a frightful fiend
Doth close behind him tread.

Cheery stuff, hmmm... At the moment I'm reading The Autobiography Of An Optimist

James HetfieldJames Hetfield from a feature, and I use that term loosely, I wrote on the Big 4 for Guitar World. Features lots of nice photos of your Heavy Metal Heroes.

Jimmy PageJimmy Page

The new issue of GW with Jimmy Page in 3D. Every time I look at 3D I feel weird. I think the spread looks good, and JP does not look bad at all for sixty-six.

Joe PerryJoe Perry

Joe Perry from a little while ago. I like the black and white photo I shot last year in Los Angeles and Joe is sixty today - so a big happy birthday "Herr Perry".

Judas Priest

And Judas Priest from the first every Donington Festival before the word Download even existed.

September 8

Checked emails and had a nice one from Paul Stanley inviting me to lunch - except it's in LA. I wish I'd stayed, it's always a pleasure seeing Paul.

At home it's raining and I'm having a new shower put in, which kind of goes together. And last night I noticed it was getting darker earlier, winter is coming - I need to go some where warm, or I'm having LA withdrawals.

I was invited to the Armani Store for Giorgio Armani's Fashion week party. Driving around Berkeley Square was mental, jam-packed with people all doing the same at various stores.

Armanis was A-List in a British way - lots of people I recognise but don't know the names. The store was ablaze with film lights and cameras. As Giorgio worked the room he walked past me, made eye-contact and turned to shake my hand. It was surreal, me and Giorgio 'Alright?' And it was done far more professionally and more friendly than music PR events. He shook my hand firmly, smiled and moved on at his pace, not being ushered - I was impressed.

Armani partySaw the most stunning Asian girl with someone far older than me, I was jealous. Yukit from Armani escorted me around and here am I with a couple of the ladies. The store had a huge garden packed full of models, chain-smoking all night. Disgusting, no respect for where they were, it's all about "Them". As I ordered a drink the barman (who told me his name was Moss) said he was a big fan of my travel photography and when was my book out, which was gave me a good buzz for the evening. He seemed very cool - thank you Moss, it's out in November.

September 7

Guitar AfficianadoThe cover of Guitar Aficionado was shot for a fashion feature styled by my good friend Gordon Gheller, who did an exceptional job. The Pearly Gates guitar Billy is holding he signed at the end of the shoot and gave it to me. The whole feature looks very, well, stylish.

I'm off to New York Friday or Saturday to meet up with Billy at John Varvato's store - haven't been to New York for years.

And my Metallica Book is out on Chronicle books in October. Now I looked at it properly on my flight home from Los Angeles and I'm pleased that there is plenty of The Ultimate Metallica by Ross HalfinThe Ultimate Metallica by Ross Halfinoss Halfincopy to read, with contributions from Lars, Kirk, Peter Mensch, Phil Alexander, Paul Rees, Steffan Chirazi, Paul Brannigan and Brad Tolinski. Also I've written my thoughts so it's not all pictures and it gives a good insight into my relationship The Ultimate Metallica by Ross Halfinwith the band, or at least I think it does.

A spread of crowds from Mexico which features in the book.

September 6

One of those days where I felt at peace - by that I mean it was perfect. Beautiful weather. I went to Macy's, got underwear in the sale plus the other day I got a red scarf for $40 reduced from $360. Got everything done I needed to - I felt sort of accomplished.

I was stopped at the Sunset Marquis by two fans who told me they loved my photos which is nice. They were on the last day of a holiday from Manchester. As I was talking to them David Grey walked past with a black cloud hanging over his head. He looks miserable - I considered telling him I liked his new record but thought I'd leave him to his gloom.

Checked out, off to LAX - Billy Gibbons called me to arrange to meet up and hang out in New York this weekend. Off home on Air New Zealand. And I want to thank Karen Sihota for looking after me. As much as I hate to admit it Karen took very good care of me...

As I sit in my seat I ask for a window seat I had booked. So I am just doing that when the purser runs over to point out that I can't change the seats in case there is a crash and they need to identify body parts. Charming way to start your journey, you might die and only a few bits might be left. In fact the crew were ok good service as it should be, a couple of Lorazepam and I was flying with the pilot....

September 5

Ross at Chateau Wheat RH at Brian'sRH at Chateau Wheat

Went shopping - it's Labor Day in Los Angeles so 70% off everything. I ended up record shopping, got John McLaughlin, My Goal's Beyond, mint on vinyl which I've been after for ages, and a dvd of the Korean film, Mother, which I wanted to see. Fraser Craig from Florida had sent me a load of LPs - thank you Fraser. I need to figure out how to get them home.

Found a book called The Child Thief with beautiful illustrations. It is a modern take on Peter Pan. Even treated myself to a manicure and pedicure, one of the things men do here and not in England.

Spoke to Steve Gorman to catch up. I'd like to go and shoot the Black Crowes - might come back and do it when they play LA.

Something to remember "If you're going through hell keep walking"...

September 4

Flew out of an empty Sacramento airport back to Los Angeles. Sat on the plane missing the Wheats, both are good friends. Before I left Brian insisted on doing a shoot of me in front of his house (for his Halfin book), it went amazingingly - I look like, well, me.

A copy of my new book, The Ultimate Metallica, was sent to me at my hotel. Now I normally pick holes in things I do but I have to say it looks fantastic. Good printing, the pictures pop out at you and the designer, Tom Jerman, has done a great job. So a big thank you Tom! While I'm at it also thanks again to Steffan Chirazi for glueing the parts together. It's out in October on Chronicle Books.

Had a wander down to Book Soup for a browse, nothing beats a good book shop. Then dinner with a posse of my friends at Cecconi's. It was full on. Then finished the evening and early morning at the Soho House, it definitely had a vibe. I'd love to get a membership...

September 3

Up at 5am and off to LAX. Flew up to Sacramento to photograph Soulmotor - it wasn't just hot it was baking. Made Los Angeles seem cold and it's a hundred degrees there.

Staying with Brian and Monique Wheat in their wonderful Victorian house right in the middle of downtown. Had lunch with Brian who then showed me an amazing record shop called The Beat - good vinyl, I wanted to spend hours there. I was dragged out after an hour then found Newsbeat, one of the best magazine shops. It had a eclectic mix of everything you could imagine and it sold English sweets, plus cards and books.

Ross with to Morello

Actually did some work, shot Soulmotor in the early evening. We found an area with an old ice warehouse. It was surrounded by lunatics. Drunks staggering around, loonies shouting. One lay on the floor groaning at the top of his voice - I was hoping a car would come along and run the fucker over. The police arrived and wanted to know what we were doing, while ignoring the loonies all around us - welcome to America...

Karen with her Master Ross with flag

My personal photographer Brian took some photos of the Master with his female slave andsometime assistant, plus a few portraits of me looking my worst. He's going to publish a book, "Halfin by Wheat" - yes, I know you can't wait.

All this was followed by another night of fine dining with the Wheats, at Kru where on the menu is a Tesla roll. I am not making this up - Brian spends so much money there they named a roll after his band.

It was quite relaxing chilling in the 'hood with the Wheats - back to Los Angeles in the morning.

September 2

Nice to wake up to sunshine and warmth, except that I wake up at 4am and it's still dark and I'm wide awake. "Waiting For The Sun", as the song goes.

Spent last night at Ago in the company of the very beautiful and fun Boh Runga. I hadn't seen her for a while and it was great to catch up - and she bought me dinner.

Went and ran, it it clears my mind. I saw Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother who's in LA writing, and Joe Bonamassa. Lunch time I even did a bit of work photographing Tom Morello at his home - easy and a pleasure. Matt Kent took some photos of the two of us, then everyone there wanted their picture with Tom. I felt like a wedding photographer. Still it's nice to do a job that's, well, easy, and the subject matter is educated and well-mannered and pleasant.

Even got my hair cut and had another run - did Ab-lab at Equinox. I'll be superman soon.

Shot the dawn light from my window, over a row of palm trees. I've done it before and I found it oddly serene - it helped me wait for the day to begin.

September 1

Ross at Reading

RH, shot last week by the lovely Monique Wheat

Los Angeles - it's been a while since I was last here. Flew on Air New Zealand which was nice as it was empty. Okay, the back was full, it's the front bit that was empty. I was not looking forward to the flight, worried about panicking, something I suffer from sometimes when the flight is long or I'm tired. Seriously, I get to a point where I want to get off and I feel like I'm entombed in a coffin. Some lorazepam sorted me out, it made me "drift", as if I was flying the plane. If I'd had Electric Ladyland, 1983 A Merman I Will Be I'd be in space, floating. Go and play it and you'll get the effect - and that was without drinking on it.

Watched the route map, even numbed it was interesting looking at things over Iceland like the Eirik Ridge and Angmassalik. It could have been Greenland but I was vapourising at that point - the only way to fly.

Had dinner at 'Wa' Uni, with truffle oil - you can't beat it. Turned on my phone and got a nice personal message on my mobile from Chris Cornell, which was unexpected and rather made my week.

It's warm, the sun is shining and I like LA. People knock it, I don't know why.

The Equinox gym is the best gym in the world. Strangely I seem to be living my life backwards, I'm healthier and fitter than I was in my teens, and single and I'm kind of okay with it although any Gong Li/Lucy Lui types who want a date do get in touch - the girl of my dreams I await you...

Got a list of things to do- a haircut (it's been a while), then shopping, and a bit more shopping. I may even take some photos.

Been playing the new Soulmotor cd which is good and still listening to Phil Mogg & The Sign Of 4. It is excellent, better than UFO.

Josh Homme and friends rocking Reading. I love Josh - a genuinely nice guy.
