Have spent the last week touring, which is what I used to do when I started and its come around again full circle except when you get older it’s harder. What I mean by that is in my youth you could drink take drugs try to chase girls and you thought you were invincible . Now sober it’s just tiring and anyone around you drunk you wish they’d just fuck off or leave the building.
Wembley with the Hollywood Vampires I went with Jimmy Page, the highlight for me was seeing Jimmy and Alice Cooper talk about playing together at the Whisky A Go Go in 1969.
The next day I was at the Kerrang awards just because Phil Alexander talked me into going. It was in Islington Town Hall, walking along Upper Street I passed The Hope And Anchor a pub I used to go to while at Art Collage where all the dreadful pub rock bands played rubbish like Nick Lowe-Bees Make Honey-Ducks Deluxe-The Tyla Gang although I did see The Pirates and Phil Rambow there and they were good.
I haven’t been to a K Awards in nearly twenty years, it was odd a lot of people I’d forgotten and some I would rather forget about. I spent most of the evening with Johnny Depp in a room backstage and Tony Iommi joined us who told some very funny stories about John Bonham and Keith Moon, it was fantastic to see Tony.
Friday and Saturday was the Foo Fighters at the Olympic Stadium in the Far East or West Ham Hooligan Stadium as it should be called. Lets face it Dave Grohl is one of the best front men in front of a massive crowd, he just controls 80,000 people at a time with ease. Dave should be a General he could lead an army. I did a quick photo in front of the West Ham shield. Enjoyed photographing the Kills Saturday. Bid Adieu to the Foo’s got home slept for four hours then Kings Cross for Eurostar to Brussels except the tunnels were closed due to power failure. I then ran into Rami from the Foo Fighters who was also stuck trying to get to Paris. Three hours late and I get to Brussels just in time to miss a ride on the Vampires Tour Bus. I eventually got a ride only another two hours and I got there before the Hollywood Vampires.
The highlight of Grasspop was seeing Glenn Tipton who played the encores with Judas Priest . Took some pictures of Johnny Depp with Ice T and Maynard from A Perfect Circle. Finished a long day photographing Ozzy then headed home on the Ozzy jet only to find we had to drive two hours to an airport then landed in Southend where I haven’t been since 1977 got home at 5.15 to bright daylight…… a long day.
And I must say the security at Grasspop beat’s everyone else hands down In the photo pit they were helpful and polite compared to say the Olympic Stadium where they glared at you hoping you would challenge one so they could attack you on mass. Grasspop was a real pleasure.
